The acquisition of MPREIS Hydrogen GmbH by Tyczka Hydrogen marks the transition from a regional pilot to a cross-border industrial platform – a systemic milestone for Europe’s green hydrogen economy.

A New Beginning for Hydrogen in the Alps
The MPREIS Hydrogen facility in Völs, Austria – once a pioneering symbol of the Tirol 2050 energieautonom strategy – has entered a new chapter. In October 2025, Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH announced the full acquisition of MPREIS Hydrogen GmbH, including its electrolysis plant, hydrogen refueling station, and operations team.¹ Far from an ending, this step marks the beginning of a new systemic phase for Europe’s emerging hydrogen economy.
From a Regional Vision to a European Bridge
When the Green Energy Center Europe was founded in 2016, its mission was to translate long-term regional goals into real industrial transformation. The MPREIS Hydrogen project became the practical embodiment of that idea – producing green hydrogen from Tyrolean hydropower to fuel logistics fleets and create circular energy flows. As one of Europe’s first privately financed hydrogen ecosystems, it proved that regional autonomy and industrial innovation can coexist – long before “hydrogen” became a mainstream policy word.
The Transition – From Pioneer to Market Integration
On 27 October 2025, Tyczka Hydrogen announced the acquisition of MPREIS Hydrogen GmbH in Völs, Tyrol.²
The deal includes the electrolysis plant, the refueling infrastructure, and trailer filling systems – together with the local expert team that has operated the site since 2021. Legal advisor Binder Grösswang confirmed the cross-border transaction in a separate press release.³ Industry observers such as H₂-View described the acquisition as “a strategic bridge between Southern Germany and the Alps.”⁴

Systemic Implications – From Innovation to Integration
In the logic of systemic innovation, this step represents much more than a change of ownership. It marks a shift in system leadership – from a regionally anchored innovation ecosystem toward a professionalized, cross-border hydrogen platform.
For the Green Energy Center Europe, this transition opens the next learning cycle: maintaining innovation capacity within a market-driven structure while continuing to act as the third entrepreneurial layer – a free, cooperative and systemic workspace connecting policy, science, and industry.
Beyond Hope and Hype
Hydrogen in Tyrol has always been more than a technology story. It stands as a metaphor for Europe’s broader transformation: the difficult balance between ambition, inertia, and renewal. Real change, as this case shows, does not happen despite system shifts – but through them.
Or, as Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed during his 2025 visit to AQT at the Green Energy Center Europe:
**“Europe must and can reinvent itself.”**⁵
and
“For us, hydrogen has never been just a technology — it’s a metaphor for Europe’s ability to learn and change.”
— Ernst Fleischhacker, Founder, Green Energy Center Europe
This transition does not close a chapter — it scales the vision. The Green Energy Center Europe will continue supporting the evolution of this ecosystem — together with European industry partners — as part of its mission to build a systemic bridge to a climate-neutral, resilient and energy-autonomous Europe.
